The Vision:
The Cascade Agenda is the most far-reaching conservation effort of our time. Together with its many partners, Cascade Land Conservancy will protect land on a scale that our region and the rest of the country have never seen before. The Cascade Agenda is a 100-year vision to conserve nearly 1.3 million acres of critical lands in the four counties covered by the Agenda – King, Kittitas, Pierce and Snohomish – while recognizing the need for adequate, affordable housing and for a strong economy to support population gains expected in the Puget Sound region over the next century.
Our Tools:
Transfer of Development Rights
The Cascade Agenda has identified Transfer of Development Rights-(TDR)-as a key strategy in its plan for an economically strong and environmentally sound future for our region. TDR is a market-based mechanism that promotes responsible growth, while conserving areas such as prime agricultural and environmentally sensitive lands.
The TDR Regional Marketplace Bill 2 SHB 1636 signed into law by Governor Chris Gregoire on May 15, 2007 may result in legislation that will increase the viability of the TDR concept.
Cascade Agenda Cities Program
Attractive, vibrant cities provide the great places to live that act as a magnet for growth, protecting our region’s natural and working lands from sprawling development. The Cascade Agenda Cities™ program partners with cities throughout the central Puget Sound region to promote great public spaces, quality neighborhoods, and a sound economy. Partnerships have been established with the cities of Kirkland, Issaquah and Tacoma. Tacoma is the first city to become a Cascade Agenda Cities™ Leadership Partner,by making strategic investments to implement The Cascade Agenda at the local level.
Green Cities Programs
The Cascade Land Conservancy, host of the Cascade Agenda, has developed a series of public-private partnerships with municipal agencies to develop community-based stewardship programs for forested parklands and community open spaces. The Green Cities Program has developed a 20-year plan for the Green Seattle Partnership, and is now using this model to develop similar plans in other cities, including partnerships with Tacoma and Kirkland.
